Discovering Lombok: The Ultimate Guide to Work-Friendly Cafes, Waterfalls, Yoga, Beaches, and Surfing

Updated: Sep 27

Locals say that Lombok is what Bali was like 20-30 years ago before tourists discovered it. It is similar to old school Bali in many ways; there's great surfing, friendly locals, and plenty of opportunity for tropical adventures. However, it also maintains its own traditions, spectacular sights, and sense of self.

Lombok appeals to budget backpackers, surfers, and digital nomads alike. It draws in backpackers with its affordability and the feeling of being off the beaten path. Also the waves are tropical and friendly, making them perfect for both beginners and more experienced surfers. And digital nomads who are seeking a break from the busyness of Bali can still enjoy Lombok's work-friendly infrastructure and affordability.

Interestingly, there's a travel pipeline between Lombok and Siargao in the Philippines, because they both have a similar, laidback surf town vibe. You are likely to run into the same crowd of kooks on both islands despite the fact that they're in different countries in Southeast Asia.

Here's a guide to making the most out of your trip to Lombok, Indonesia (that is, if you don't decide to move there):

Where to Stay in Lombok, Indonesia

Pipes is probably the most popular hostel in Lombok, so it's worth booking in advance if you know what dates you're visiting. It is a big hostel for surfers and it is super social and friendly. They have a pool, cafe, and a skate bowl.

Kainiu Lombok Hostel is a friendly hostel with lots of tropical, green spaces. The dorms are comfy with capsule-style bed spaces and they host tons of events for their guests.

Cafes/Remote Work Spots in Lombok, Indonesia

One of the best parts of visiting Lombok as a digital nomad is that you can benefit from Bali's infrastructure with more of the authentic Indonesian charm. The best places to work remotely in Lombok are the cafes where you can also enjoy their great coffee, smoothies, and breakfast options.

SOMM Café:

SOMM Café is known for its lovely breakfast, friendly staff, and beautiful views. It is an open, beachy cafe with smoothie bowls, croissants, and sandwiches. They also have hammocks and strong wifi, making it a great place to work remotely with a view.

Fin Cafe:

Fin Cafe has strong wifi, delicious salads, and relaxed vibes. Fin Cafe is perfect for those looking for a plant-based meal, and their falafel salad is very popular. They also have a proper, Western coffee machine for coffee snobs or Aussies.

Bush Radio

Bush Radio uses locally-sourced ingredients such as vegetables, tofu, and even their coffee beans. It's a friendly place to start the morning whether you're with a group of friends or working remotely from your laptop.

Beaches in Lombok, Indonesia

Whether you are looking to tan or shred, there's a beach for everyone in Lombok.

Mawi Beach

Ideal for advanced surfers, Mawi Beach boasts strong waves and a stunning landscape. The drive to Mawi Beach is a journey in itself, with scenic routes that promise beautiful views and a taste of local life.

Tebuk Beach

A bit outside of Kuta, Tebuk Beach is known for its scenic beauty. Nearby, you’ll find Ryan Café perched on a hill, offering panoramic views that are perfect for a relaxing break.

Tanjung Aan Beach

Known for its pristine sands and clear waters, Tanjung Aan Beach is a must-visit for beachgoers seeking a picturesque spot to unwind. It's a bit further from the city, but the drive is lovely.

Surf Schools in Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is home to many beautiful breaks, with tropical conditions allowing for smoother, slower waves. It's a great place to learn how to surf or just enjoy a day out on the water. Whether you are a novice or a professional surfer, everyone benefits from proper lessons. From experience, I can also tell you know that they are far more affordable than lessons in Australia, Mexico, or most other popular surf spots.

Sarriel Surf School, Lombok Indonesia

Sarriel Surf School has many experienced instructors who are passionate about sharing their love for the ocean and helping you master the art of surfing. Whether you’re a beginner taking your first steps on the board or an experienced rider seeking to refine your skills, they have personalized lessons and coaching sessions that are tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Joe Surf Lombok

Joe Surf Lombok is run by a local, experienced surf teacher. His extensive knowledge of the local surf spots ensures you’ll always find the best waves suited to your level. From one-on-one coaching to small group sessions, this school prioritizes safety, fun, and progress.

Gerupuk Beach Surf

Gerupuk Beach is renowned for its surf-friendly waves. A local surf school offers lessons at 350k per session, which includes a board, a shirt, and a boat ride to the surf spot. If you don't want to book in advance, you can generally just walk up to the local surf school and even negotiate the prices of your lessons.

Where to Do Yoga in Lombok, Indonesia

Due to the prominence of Hinduism on Bali, yoga spread to the island hundreds of years ago. This is why is is known for having one of the strongest and most authentic yoga scenes in the world. While Lombok is not Hindu like Bali, it is predominantly Muslim, this yoga culture has seeped over from the neighboring island. Tourism has undoubtedly played a large role in this culture development, leading to the creation of yoga studios in the more popular parts of the island.

Mana Eco Retreat and Yoga, Kuta Lombok

Mana is located just outside of the main city of Kuta, and it has lovely, serene scenery where you can walk around and relax before or after your class. They offer a variety of classes including a slow flow, power, and hatha.

You can look at the Mana Eco Retreat schedule on their website here.

Ashtari Yoga, Kuta Lombok

Ashtari's studio is located up on a hill, giving it stunning views of the ocean and island scenery. While they offer traditional yin, hatha, and vinyasa classes, their schedule also includes yoga designed for surfer recovery, core strength, and breath work. Ashtari also has a Yoga Teacher Training program for those looking to dive deeper into the practice. Learn more about the Ashtari Yoga calendar here.

Best Waterfall in Lombok, Indonesia

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

The drive to Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls takes you through lush rice fields and charming local villages. The roads in Lombok are very well-maintained, wide, and just windy enough to give you a sense of adventure.

The trek will treat you to gorgeous scenery every step of the way. There are four waterfalls at the site, and many regard Kelambu as the prettiest. While many people get tired of waterfalls on a Southeast Asia tour, Indonesia is known for having some of the most impressive waterfalls in the region.

Where to Watch the Sunset in Lombok, Indonesia

Sunset lovers will find Lombok to be a paradise with several spots offering breathtaking views of the sunset right over the ocean.

Tanjung Aan Sunset Spot

One of the best parts of this sunset spot is that it is also at one of the nicest beaches in Lombok, so you are likely to already be here in the afternoon.

Bukit Merese

Bukit Merese is a hill by Tanjung Aan where you can appreciate the rolling hills and ocean views. While this is a stunning viewpoint at any time of day, the glowy hues of the sunset make it particularly remarkable.

Pantai Seger

Pantai Seger is a beach located about 2km from Kuta. There are several cafes on the beach, and there are vendors on the beach who rent out equipment for those looking to snorkel.
